Appeal for Mexican journalist Anabel Hernandez

by FLARE

In spite of repeated denounces - and in spite of promises by the Mexican authorities - the threats against Anabel Hernandez continue

On December 2010 Libera, an Italian organisation for the social fight against organised crime and a founder member of FLARE Network, wrote a letter to the Mexican Ambassador in Italy, inviting him to ask for protection for Anabel Hernandez, a Mexican journalist threatened by organised crime syndicates due to her articles and books denouncing corruption and drug trafficking.

The appeal has so far been signed by civil society representatives, journalists and politicians worried about the ever-worsening situation of violence in Mexico, a country where 68 journalists were murdered, 14 disappeared and thousands of persons were victims of the wave of violence tied to the wars between drug cartels.

Nevertheless, Anabel and her family are still receiving threats, even from Genaro Garcia Luna, the Mexican Secretary of Public Security Secretario de Seguridad Publica.

Recently, the journalist discovered that the order to kill her is still in force.

Libera decided to publish a new appeal to the Mexican President, Mr Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, inviting him to protect Anabel and other journalists, the victims of violence by organised crime and power abuse.

The full text of the appeal can be found here (in Italian).

You can sign the appeal online on Libera's website (in Italian)

You might also want to write directly to the President of Mexico, Mr Calderon, expressing your concern over the situation faced by Anabel and many others who fight for justice in Mexico:
